TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDER
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) guides jaw movement, allowing us to open and close our mouths for daily activities like talking and eating. When there are issues with the joint, it’s called temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD). If you're seeking TMJ treatment in Red Deer, we offer various solutions, including Botox for TMJ, which can help alleviate pain and tension associated with this condition.
DIAGNOSIS
TMJD is usually diagnosed through history and a physical exam. We might hear a click when you move your jaw, and clenching can cause tooth wear. People with TMJD often have strong jaw muscles, and repeated clenching can damage the joint’s disc. An MRI may be needed in some cases.
SYMPTOMS
Jaw pain
Headaches
Difficulty opening the mouth or jaw
Clicking or popping in the joint
Ear pain
Neck pain
“Lock jaw”
Ringing in your ears
TREATMENT
Botox injections: these help reduce muscle tension and strength which directly decreases stress on the temporomandibular joint. This may also have a protective effect on your teeth if you tend to clench throughout the day or night. It is also effective in reducing headaches that may be a result of TMJD.
Acupuncture or dry needling: using small needles into the muscles around the jaw may help alleviate tension and pain.
Chiropractic: there is a close relationship between neck pain and stiffness and TMJD. Gentle mobilization of the cervical spine may facilitate relief for those who suffer from this condition.
Manual therapy: hands on muscle release with active release technique or graston.
Exercise and rehabilitation: a rehabilitation program focused on reducing neck and jaw tension can help restore jaw function.
